What Is Umrah?
Umrah is a pilgrimage to Makkah that a Muslim can perform at any time of year. Hajj happens once a year on fixed dates. Umrah does not. You enter a state of ihram, perform tawaf around the Kaaba seven times, walk between Safa and Marwah seven times, then cut your hair. Most Canadian pilgrims add a visit to Madinah, which is not part of Umrah itself but holds deep meaning for many.
You can complete the rites in a single day. Most people take a week so they are not rushing.
Ottawa Umrah Package Prices
Prices are per person, based on two or more sharing a room. They move with the season. Ramadan and the December school break cost the most. Ask us for a firm quote before you plan around a figure.

Flying to Saudi Arabia from Ottawa
There are no direct flights from Ottawa to Jeddah or Madinah. Every route has at least one stop. This is the first thing most Ottawa pilgrims ask about, so here are your three real options.
Connect through Toronto or Montreal: A short hop to Pearson or Trudeau, then one long flight onward. This is the most common route and usually the cheapest.
Connect through a Gulf hub: Emirates through Dubai, Qatar Airways through Doha, or Turkish Airlines through Istanbul. Longer on paper. Often more comfortable, and the aircraft on the long leg tend to be newer.
Connect through Europe: Air France through Paris works well in the summer months.
Total travel time runs 15 to 22 hours, depending on your connection. We book the route that suits your budget and your patience. If a $60 saving costs you a nine-hour layover, we will say so.
One tip for Ottawa flyers. In January and February, freezing rain can delay the YOW to Toronto leg. We build a longer connection into winter bookings, so a short delay at home does not cost you the flight to Jeddah.
YOW sits about 13 kilometres south of downtown Ottawa. If you are coming from Kanata, Stittsville or across the river in Gatineau, give yourself extra time in winter.
Your Umrah Visa, Handled
Canadian passport holders apply for the Umrah visa through Saudi Arabia's Nusuk platform. We do the application for you as part of your package.
What we need from you:
- Passport valid for at least six months from your travel date
- A recent passport-style photo on a white background
- Your meningococcal ACWY vaccination certificate
- Your Canadian address and contact details
Processing usually takes two to five working days. In Ramadan it can stretch to a week or more, because Saudi Arabia handles a huge volume of applications at once. Apply at least three to four weeks before you fly.
The Umrah visa lets you enter Saudi Arabia and travel between Makkah, Madinah and other cities. It is not a Hajj visa. It does not allow you to perform Hajj.
The Meningitis Vaccine: Do Not Leave This Late
Saudi Arabia requires proof of a meningococcal ACWY vaccine for every pilgrim aged one and older. You must have it at least 10 days before you arrive. If you get the conjugate version, the certificate is good for five years.
In Ottawa you can get the shot at most travel clinics, at some pharmacies, and through Ottawa Public Health. Book the appointment as soon as you pick your dates. We have seen people lose a departure date over a vaccine they left until the final week.
Bring the paper certificate. Keep a photo of it on your phone too.
Choosing Your Hotel: How Close Is Close?
Most of the price difference sits here. This is also where people feel let down by other agencies.
3 star: Roughly a 10 to 20 minute walk to the Haram, or a short shuttle ride. Clean, simple rooms. Good value if you are on a budget and happy to walk.
4 star: Usually 5 to 10 minutes on foot. Better rooms and a better breakfast. This is the level most Canadian families pick.
5 star: In or beside the Haram complex. You step out of the lobby and you are there. Worth the money if you travel with older parents, small children, or anyone who cannot walk far.
We give you the hotel name and the real walking distance before you pay a cent. Not a vague phrase about being close by. The name, and the number of minutes.
When Should You Go?
You can perform Umrah at any time of year, apart from the Hajj days.
Ramadan is the most rewarding time and the busiest. Prices peak and hotels sell out months ahead. For the last ten nights, book at least six months early.
December and March line up with Ottawa school breaks, so they are popular with families. Book early for these too.
October, November and January are the quiet months. Mild weather in Makkah, thinner crowds, and the best prices of the year.
Summer is cheap but hot. Daytime temperatures in Makkah can pass 45°C. Fine for younger travellers. Hard on seniors.
Travelling with Family, or on Your Own
Families with children: Children under two normally travel as lap infants at a reduced fare. We can book connecting or family rooms so nobody is split up.
Women travelling without a mahram: Saudi rules now allow women to perform Umrah without a male guardian, as long as the trip is booked through a licensed operator. We arrange this for Ottawa clients often. Call us and we will walk you through it.
Seniors and anyone with mobility needs: Tell us at the start. We will put you in a hotel close to the Haram, book wheelchair help at the airports, and explain how the Haram's own wheelchair and cart services work.
Groups from your masjid: If you are organizing a group from a mosque or community in Nepean, Kanata, Barrhaven, Orléans, or Gatineau, we offer group rates, a shared plan and one coordinator for everyone. Ten travellers or more gets you group pricing.
First-timers: You get a plain-English guide before you fly. Where you enter ihram, how tawaf and sa'i work, and what happens when you land in Jeddah. Most first-time nerves settle once somebody explains the order of things properly.
