Why booking Umrah from Edmonton is different?

There is no direct flight from Edmonton to Jeddah. Not one. In fact, Edmonton International has no direct service to the Middle East at all, so every pilgrim leaving YEG connects somewhere, and the journey runs about 22 to 28 hours door to door.

That single fact changes how you should book. A package built for a Toronto family does not work for you. Your connection times, your baggage transfer and where you put on your ihram all need thinking about before you pay a deposit.

We have handled Umrah for Canadian families since 2010, and Hajj and Umrah travel for [30 years / see note]. We are authorized by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Bookings sit under Harmain Travel Limited, TICO registration 50018801, so your money is held under Ontario travel regulation rather than in someone's personal account.

How much does Umrah cost from Edmonton?

All prices are per person and cover return flights from Edmonton, hotels in both cities, transfers and the Nusuk visa.

Three star is where our Edmonton packages start. Five nights begins at $1,080, seven nights at $1,110, the seven night deluxe at $1,140 and ten nights at $1,145.

Four star costs surprisingly little more. Five nights begins at $1,105, seven nights at $1,140, the seven night deluxe at $1,170 and ten nights at $1,170 as well.

Five star is the real jump. Five nights begins at $1,492, seven nights at $1,505, the seven night deluxe at $1,545 and ten nights at $1,547.

Look at those three numbers side by side and one thing stands out. Moving from three star to four star costs about $25 to $30, whichever length you pick, and it buys you a shorter walk to the Haram. It is the easiest decision on this page, and most Edmonton families make it. Going up to five star is a different conversation, roughly $390 more, which is worth it for a group with anyone elderly in it or for Ramadan travel, and hard to justify otherwise.

Prices move with airfare and the season. Ramadan costs more, and the last ten nights cost the most of all. If your dates are flexible, ask us which weeks are cheapest before you fix them.

Most families we book set aside $300 to $600

So a realistic all-in figure for a 7 night trip in a 4 star hotel, leaving Edmonton, lands somewhere between CAD $1,600 and $2,200 per person. Anyone quoting you a final number without asking about your dates is guessing.

Looking at other cities? Our Vancouver Umrah Packages sit a little higher because of the airfare, and our full range of Cheap Umrah Package options covers every departure city we serve.

What is included in an Edmonton Umrah package?

Included: return flights from Edmonton, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, your Nusuk Umrah visa, airport transfers in Saudi Arabia, and the Makkah to Madinah transfer.

Not included: your meningococcal vaccine, travel insurance, meals unless the package says otherwise, extra baggage, and anything you spend in Saudi Arabia.

Ask any agency for that second list in writing before you pay. A package that looks $300 cheaper often has the visa fee or the ground transport sitting outside the quoted price.

Flights from Edmonton to Jeddah and Madinah

Every route from YEG has at least one stop. These are the patterns we book most:

Through Toronto: Saudia flies Toronto to Jeddah non-stop, about 12 hours, a few times a week. Connect from Edmonton to Pearson and this is your only genuine one-stop option, and usually the cheapest. You clear your bags through to Jeddah.

Through Amsterdam: KLM flies Edmonton to Amsterdam non-stop, four or five times a week, and it is the only intercontinental departure YEG has. It works well when the Toronto flights are full, though the total time is often longer.

Through a Gulf hub: Qatar, Emirates, Etihad and Turkish all connect east of Toronto or Montreal. Two stops, more time in airports, but sometimes a much better fare and better seats.

Into Madinah instead of Jeddah: Several carriers route into Madinah first. Many families prefer this. You start in Madinah at a calmer pace, then travel to Makkah for the Umrah itself.

Which one suits you depends on your group. If you are travelling with elderly parents, a longer layover with a proper rest beats a tight 90 minute connection every time. Tell us who is coming and we will build the routing around them, not around the lowest fare on the screen.

Umrah visa rules for Canadian pilgrims

This is where more bookings go wrong than anywhere else. Both rules changed recently, and they pull in opposite directions.

Rule one: no booking, no visa: Saudi Arabia requires your accommodation, and now your ground transport, to be booked with a licensed provider and recorded on the Nusuk platform before the visa can be issued. Book your flights and apply for the visa first, the way you would for any other country, and the application stalls.

Rule two: 30 days, not 90: The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah cut the entry window on an Umrah visa from three months to 30 days from the date it is issued. If you do not enter Saudi Arabia inside those 30 days, the visa cancels itself. The clock starts on the issue date, not your flight date. Once you are in the country, you can still stay up to 90 days.

Between them, those two rules mean the old advice of "apply as early as possible" is now wrong. Fix your dates, let us register the hotel and transport on Nusuk, then apply. We handle that order for you as part of the package. If you are booking elsewhere, ask them straight out: is my hotel and my transport being registered on Nusuk before the visa goes in?

Processing usually takes 24 to 72 hours. During Ramadan it can stretch to about a week. Download the Nusuk app before you leave Edmonton, because most of the on-the-ground steps, including your Umrah permit and your Rawdah booking in Madinah, happen inside it.

Season dates shift each year and Umrah visa issuance pauses around Hajj. Call us and we will tell you what window you are actually looking at. More detail on documents is on our Umrah Visa page.

What vaccine do you need for Umrah?

Proof of a quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY vaccine is required for every pilgrim aged one and older. It must be given at least ten days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia.

Ten days. That is the part people miss. If you book a departure three weeks out and leave the vaccine until the week before, you do not fly.

Get it early at a travel clinic or pharmacy in Edmonton, and check the certificate says conjugate. A conjugate certificate is treated as valid for five years, a polysaccharide one for three. The certificate needs your name, the vaccine type and the date on it, and the name must match your passport. A record from your doctor, clinic or pharmacy is enough. You do not need the yellow international card.

Flu shots are strongly recommended for winter and Ramadan travel. Polio proof is only needed if you have been in a polio-affected country in the past twelve months.

3, 4, or 5 stars: How far is the hotel from the Haram?

The star rating on an Umrah hotel is really a question about walking distance.

Hotel class

Typical distance to the Haram

Suits

3 star

800 m to 1.5 km, often with a shuttle

Groups who walk comfortably and want the budget going elsewhere

4 star

300 m to 800 m

Most of our Edmonton families. Better lifts, real difference over five trips a day

5 star

Short walk, often under 200 m

Anyone elderly, anyone using a wheelchair, and Ramadan travel

During Ramadan the crowds make every extra hundred metres feel like a kilometre, and the walk back after Taraweeh is the one people underestimate.

Before you book on stars alone, ask us for the walking distance in metres and whether the lifts back up at prayer times. Those two answers tell you more than the rating does.

Flying out of Edmonton in winter

A January departure from YEG is its own project.

Give yourself extra time at the airport for de-icing delays, and do not book the tightest connection available between December and February. One missed link in Toronto can cost you a full day of a seven night trip.

Pack for two climates in one bag. You leave in a parka and land where it is 30 °C. A thin layer you can strip off in the connecting terminal saves you carrying a winter coat through Makkah.

If your flight leaves at night, plan how you will pray on the way. Our team can tell you what the prayer facilities are like at your connecting airport.

Where do you put on ihram when flying from Edmonton?

If you are flying into Jeddah, you cross the miqat in the air. Most pilgrims change into ihram at the connecting airport before that last flight, and the crew normally announces when the miqat is coming up. Trying to change in an aircraft washroom at 35,000 feet is not something anyone enjoys.

If you are flying into Madinah first, you do not enter ihram on the way. You will do that later at Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, when you travel toward Makkah.

We go through this on the phone with every first-time pilgrim, step by step, before you fly. For rulings specific to your situation, speak to your imam. Al Rashid and the other Edmonton masjids will guide you, and we are happy to work around whatever they advise.

Umrah with elderly parents

Most of the Edmonton bookings we take include someone's mother or father, and that changes the plan.

Tell us at the inquiry stage if anyone in the group needs a wheelchair, has trouble with long walks, or takes medication on a fixed schedule. We will request airport assistance on every leg, choose a hotel with a shorter approach to the Haram, and avoid routings with long overnight layovers.

Doing this after booking is possible. Doing it before is much cheaper.

How to book Umrah from Edmonton, step by step?

  1. Call or WhatsApp us on 647 258 1244 with your dates, the number of travellers and anyone's mobility needs.
  2. We come back with a routing and a price. Usually the same day.
  3. You confirm and pay the deposit. Bookings are held under Harmain Travel Limited, TICO 50018801.
  4. We register your hotel and transport on Nusuk, then submit your visa. Approval normally takes 24 to 72 hours.
  5. You get your ACWY vaccine in Edmonton, at least ten days before you fly.
  6. We brief you before departure on the routing, the miqat and the Nusuk app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Umrah cost from Edmonton?

Umrah packages from Edmonton start at CAD $1,080 per person for 5 nights in a 3 star hotel and reach CAD $1,547 for 10 nights in a 5 star. That covers return flights, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, transfers and the Nusuk visa. Budget another $400 to $700 per person for the vaccine, insurance, meals, extra baggage and spending money.

Are there direct flights from Edmonton to Jeddah?

No. Edmonton International has no direct service to Saudi Arabia or anywhere else in the Middle East. Every routing has at least one stop, most often Toronto, where Saudia flies non-stop to Jeddah. Total travel time from Edmonton is roughly 22 to 28 hours each way.

How long is the journey from Edmonton to Makkah?

About 22 to 28 hours door to door, including the connection. From Jeddah airport it is a further 90 minutes or so by road to Makkah, which is included in our packages.

How far ahead should I book Umrah from Edmonton?

Six to eight weeks for a normal departure. Four to six months for Ramadan, and longer still for the last ten nights, which sell out first. Note that the Umrah visa itself should be applied for close to travel, because it now expires 30 days after it is issued.

What vaccine do I need for Umrah?

A quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY vaccine, required for every pilgrim aged one and older, given at least ten days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia. Ask for the conjugate version, which is treated as valid for five years rather than three, and make sure the certificate name matches your passport.

How long does an Umrah visa take?

Usually 24 to 72 hours once your hotel and transport are registered on the Nusuk platform. During Ramadan it can take about a week. The visa must be used to enter Saudi Arabia within 30 days of being issued, so it is applied for close to your departure date, not months ahead.

Can women perform Umrah without a mahram?

Saudi Arabia's visa rules no longer require a mahram for adult women, and women can be issued an Umrah visa travelling alone or with a group. The religious ruling is a separate question, and scholars differ on it, so speak to your imam. Rules in this area have changed more than once, so call us on 647 258 1244 and we will confirm the current position for your specific booking before you pay anything.

Do you have an office in Edmonton?

No. Our office is in London, Ontario, and we serve Edmonton pilgrims by phone, WhatsApp and email. You are welcome to call as often as you need before you commit to anything.

What if my flight from Edmonton is delayed or cancelled?

Call the number on your booking confirmation. Our support works 24/7, so someone can rebook you regardless of the hour in Alberta.

Is my money protected?

Yes. Bookings are made through Harmain Travel Limited, TICO registration 50018801, which means client funds are held under Ontario travel regulation.
